Lanzarote is the northernmost of the Canary Islands, an autonomous region of Spain located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Africa. Like the other six islands of the Canaries, Lanzarote has been dubbed “Island of Eternal Spring”, thanks to a warm and dry subtropical - or quasi-tropical - weather throughout the whole year. The island sees just 16 days of rain a year; the average temperature in winter is approximately 18°C C and 25°C in the summer, making Lanzarote an ideal place to rent a flat or a villa where to spend the winter months.
Kilometres of stunning rocky coastline and beaches
Lanzarote is small, measuring 60 kilometres from north to south and 25 kilometres from east to west. However, it boasts a staggering 213 kilometres of breath-taking wild coastline with beaches, small picturesque inlets, and natural pools framed by impressive solid lava formations. Renting an apartment in Lanzarote will allow you to enjoy the stunning natural landscape and the turquoise waters surrounding the island all-year-round. Apart from swimming and sunbathing, Lanzarote’s seaside is internationally famous for having perfect conditions for several water sports, among which snorkelling and scuba diving, kayaking, surfing and windsurfing among others.
A truly international island
Driven by the great weather, its international airport, and by the quality and availability of several cheap apartments for rent, Lanzarote became a very popular tourist destination for a one or two-week holiday as well as for longer periods. Many are the foreigners that fell in love with the island and decided to establish a life here, either for the whole year or for just a few months, to escape the freezing continental winter of northern Europe. On the island, a considerable portion of the population is composed of expats: mainly Britons, accounting for 6% of the total population approximately, but also Germans (3% of the population), Italians and northern Europeans.
The most popular areas where expats rent apartments and villas are Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen, close to the airport on the island’s south side. However, the capital - Arrecife and the nearby Costa Teguise also offer several properties for rent, ranging from cheap and inexpensive apartments (around € 500 per month) to princely seafront villas with gardens and private pools.
What to see and do in Lanzarote
Apart from the beautiful coastline, Lanzarote offers marvellous inland with jaw-dropping volcanic landscapes and mountains. Do not miss a visit to the Timanfaya National Park, a geologically young area that formed between the year 1730 and 1736 AD following a series of eruptions. In some areas of Timanfaya, the ground is still warm even if the volcanoes are now inactive. Another site worthy of a visit is the Cueva de Los Verdes, a massive volcanic cave which is part of one of the biggest lava tunnels in the world.
