Located on the border between Costa Cálida (Warm Coast) and Costa Blanca, Orihuela Costa distinguishes itself for being one of the main areas in Spain where foreigners, especially from central and northern Europe, settle during the winter. Orihuela Costa is almost entirely composed of considerably-sized residential complexes, with several apartments available for long terms and winter rents. An example of such a residential area is Villamartin, close to the golf course. Villamartin offers apartments and upscale villas for longer terms and vocational rentals.
The weather in Orihuela Costa is typical of the coastal regions of southern Spain, with hot summers and temperate winters. It is considered a semi-arid climate, with minimal chances of rain and an average yearly temperature of 18°C. Climate is one of the main attractions to contribute to the region’s popularity among expats.
One of the biggest expats communities in mainland Spain
According to a 2009 census, over 40% of the Orihuelans are foreigners, and the percentage increases if to be taken into account is only the coastal area of Orihuela. Over 76% of foreigners are Europeans, with approximately 17,000 British citizens and over 9,000 citizens of other European countries. Much of the foreign population concentrates in the Dehesa de Campoamor area, right behind the Miguel Caballero marina. Unofficial sources, which also take into account non-residents (foreigners who live here for a period during the year but do not have the NIE) speak of an expat population of approximately 45,000 people. This contributes to the high number of flats and villas for rent in Orihuela Costa and the surrounding urbanizations and creates a uniquely international vibe.
